Cheyenne total immersion project
Mildred Redcherries, a member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe living in Montana, prepares first project of the total Cheyenne language immersion focused on the Cheyenne kids. She named it "Meadowlark Learning Center". Mildred believes her people must go back to speaking Cheyenne with the Cheyenne children from their first years. Teachers should not lecture about the Cheyenne vocabulary and grammar in English but to talk, play games, or sing songs with children in Cheyenne as much as possible, without English as a mediating language. The fears of problems with English and integration to the US educational system are baseless. The children will not lose English, they will gain Cheyenne again! The start can be difficult but it could bring some sweet fruits. She sees it the only way how to meet the critical situation of the Cheyenne language. She have got a building for her plans recently and she requests for a grant from the Montana Indian Language Preservation Pilot Program. We fully support Mildred Redcherries' project and offer any help. Join us!
Language immersion
Each culture is unique but groups endangered with language loss share many problems. Experiences of one culture can inspire others.
